Resumen: A new systematic approach for addressing the problem of the plant-wide control structure, analyzing with both steady state and dynamic models, is presented. This methodology is tested ina well known reactor/separator with recycle plant. Several authors have presented different control alternatives for this kind of plant, however most of them meanly focused on optimum energy consumption or in the regulator problem only. In both cases the decision of the final control structure was adopted with the help of several heuristic concepts. The proposed methodology in this work takes into account both objectives: optimum energy consumption and a good regulatory behavior without involving any heuristic concepts. The pairing between manipulated and controlled variables is done by using a modified RGA accordingly with the different variables involved in the plant. Since the product quality must be under rigorous specification the reactor design is performed accounting this constraint and the overall plant controllability. Finally, the dynamic model of the plant is useful for testing the potentiality of the proposed control structure. Hence, a multivariable tuning procedure, based on IMC, is performed for tested the dynamic plant behavior in the worst disturbances scenarios.
