Resumen: A fault-tolerant control (FTC) structure performs the specific actions to maintain the process withan acceptable performance, even when the plant has faulty components such as actuators andsensors. This work presents a novel systematic methodology for plantwide control (PWC) designtaking into account the occurrence of abnormal situations. Once the PWC design for normal operation is done, a list of potential critical faults must be considered. Thus, valve sticking and complete loss of sensor measurement are proposed here. As a final result, the methodology recommends a number of alternative control loops to achieve new configurations according to each critical fault scenario. The optimal controlled (CVs) and manipulated variables (MVs) selection is done by quantifying the individual squared deviations of each uncontrolled variable (UV) and MV. Here, perfect steady-state control for the CVs when the plant is subject to disturbances and setpoint changes is assumed. This analysis results useful for predicting unwanted dynamic behavior having only steady-state information. This approach is applied to a hydrogen production plant, consisting of a bioethanol fuel processor system connected to a proton exchange membrane fuel cell for automotive purposes. The performance of the control structure with and without the proposed reconfiguration mechanism is evaluated through simulations of the rigorous nonlinear process model, subject to faults in actuators/sensors. The standard Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule is considered as load demand. Representative indexes are used for the sake of comparison and to support the final conclusions.
